The Successful Trader

The storyteller

In his youth Ahmed Ezzarghani was a travelling salesman. Selling coffee in the souks, he would often join the crowds who had gathered around storytellers or hlaykia in Marrakech’s main square, the Jemaa el Fna. It was at that time that he became interested in collecting Morocco’s traditional fables. He studied the craft and eventually began to tell the legends, myths and folk tales himself.

50 years later, as one of the few remaining master storytellers of Morocco, Haj Ahmed Ezzarghani is committed to passing the country’s rich and ancient oral heritage to the next generation. He has trained up a group of young Moroccan apprentices at the Cafe Clock in the Casbah in Marrakech to try to keep the rich Moroccan heritage alive. They put on regular weekly performances every Thursday evening, acting out spellbinding tales in both Arabic and English.
