Outwitting a Trickster

The storyteller

Agnes Wangithi Kabeu started telling stories to her friends when she was a young girl but it was only in 2010 that she began to take the practice more seriously. As a primary school teacher in Nairobi, she uses stories to impart important life lessons to her students. She laments that this age old tradition has been scrapped from the school curriculum and she is trying to revive what she thinks has become a dying art form. “Stories are a great education and entertainment tool, especially these days when children are so used to gadgets. It opens up a different part of their minds,” she adds. She hopes that one day she will work as a full-time storyteller for adults and children, performing in libraries, at birthday parties, corporate functions and youth forums.
