The storyteller

Described by her family as an actor, teller, song bird and chorister, Patricia Bazard was one of the most accomplished storytellers in the Bahamas. She served in the government of the Bahamas as senior cultural officer at the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture. She organised the National Arts Festival and helped revitalise the event, which continues to showcase performing artists of all ages. She formed the National Children’s Choir of The Bahamas. As a published author with books such as ‘Tingum Dem Say’, she shared with the world what Bahamian life was like, capturing glimpses of the islands’ culture in the seemingly simple and everyday.  Through the Ministry of Tourism’s People-to-People programme, she hosted international guests in her home where she shared Bahamian stories with them. She wrote two books of short stories as well as a piano teaching manual for very young children. She also won several national and international awards. She was a devout Christian and served as minister of music for the Salem Union Baptist Church. Patricia passed away, surrounded by members of her family, in December 2017.
